As the due date approaches, the excitement and anticipation of welcoming a new addition to the family grows exponentially.
To ensure a smoother transition into parenthood, it’s wise for expecting parents to stock up on essential items before the baby arrives.
In this article, I’ll explore a comprehensive list of must-haves to make those initial weeks with your newborn more comfortable and stress-free.
Having lots of these items is great because it can be hard to remember everything you need after the baby is born. Life might be pretty crazy for the first bit!
1. Diapers and Wipes
Stockpile diapers in various sizes to accommodate your growing baby. I recommend having at least some newborn and size 1 diapers.
Also, ensure you have an ample supply of gentle baby wipes for quick and easy cleanups. We also stock up on diaper rash cream. The one we’ve always used is Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. You can find it here.

2. Onesies and Sleepers
Babies go through a surprising number of outfit changes each day. Stock up on onesies and sleepers in different sizes to keep your little one cozy and comfortable.
3. Swaddle Blankets
Swaddle blankets help soothe and comfort newborns by providing a snug and secure feeling. Having a collection of soft, breathable swaddle blankets is a definite must.
Our favorite has always been the Love To Dream swaddle. It has a zipper, which makes it easy to get on and off and our babies have loved sleeping in them! You can get one here.
4. Burp Cloths and Bibs
Babies are experts at making messes, especially during feedings. Keep plenty of burp cloths and bibs on hand to protect your baby’s clothes and your own.
I know it may sound strange, but cloth diaper inserts work the best for burp cloths. They’re more absorbent than typical burp clothes. Get some here.
5. Formula or Breastfeeding Supplies
If you plan to formula-feed, have an ample supply of formula, bottles, and sterilizing equipment. For breastfeeding moms, ensure you have a comfortable nursing bra, breast pads, and a quality breast pump if needed.
For all of my babies I pumped and used Dr. Brown’s bottles to feed them with. Find the bottles here.
I prefer washable nursing pads because they’re much more comfortable than disposable ones. Find the ones I use here.
6. Nursery Essentials
Stock up on nursery basics like crib sheets, waterproof mattress pads, cozy blankets, and a white noise machine to create a comfortable sleeping environment for your little one.
My favorite white noise machine is linked here.
7. Diaper Changing Supplies
In addition to diapers and wipes, make sure you have diaper rash cream, changing pads, and a diaper pail to simplify the changing process.
8. Baby Bath Products
Gather baby-friendly bath products, including gentle shampoo, body wash, and a soft baby towel. A baby bathtub or bath seat is also helpful for safe and enjoyable baths.
I recommend this bath seat here.
I have always used Tubby Todd bath products on all of my babies. Shop them here.
9. Pacifiers and Soothing Items
Pacifiers and other soothing items, such as a favorite soft toy or blanket, can provide comfort to your baby and make soothing them easier.
These are the pacifiers I got for my babies here.
10. Newborn Clothes
Have a selection of cozy, easy-to-snap or zip-up newborn clothes. Opt for outfits that are practical for frequent diaper changes and comfortable for your baby.
Zipper pajamas are much easier to do than ones with snaps when you’re doing diaper changes in the middle of the night.
11. Laundry Detergent for Babies
Invest in a gentle, hypoallergenic laundry detergent specifically designed for baby clothes to keep your little one’s skin irritation-free.
Dreft is probably the most popular brand for baby detergent. Get it here!
12. Baby Gear
Depending on your lifestyle, stock up on essential baby gear such as a car seat, stroller, and baby carrier. Ensure these items are properly installed and ready for use.
We’ve always used the Chicco KeyFit 30 car seat for infants. It’s linked here.
13. Postpartum Essentials for Mom
Don’t forget about your own needs. Stock up on postpartum essentials like comfortable underwear, pads, nipple cream, and any necessary postpartum care items.
14. Household Essentials
Prepare for the postpartum period by stocking up on household essentials like non-perishable groceries, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Having these items on hand will make it easier to focus on your new bundle of joy.
Conclusion
By stocking up on these essential items before your baby’s arrival, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the exciting but demanding early days of parenthood.
Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your growing family, thoughtful preparation ensures a smoother transition, allowing you to focus on creating precious moments with your newborn.
